diy urban aquaponics | The Inspiration

diy urban aquaponics

Sharing some photos of where my 2010 IAPLC tank idea coming from. Its a moss garden photo of Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavillion) Temple at Kyoto. What you see on the ground is all moss not grass. I was so amaze and decided to create something like that in aquarium. Unfortunately there are similarity with 2009 IAPLC rank #12 and 35 but cant be help. I start this tank before 2009 IAPLC result is out. By the time I have the IAPLC booklet, it is already too late to change.

This year work "Beyond Darkness" happen to win the first price of AQ + ADA Singapore Aquascaping Contest 2010. Although I have to thanks Sim (IAPLC 2009 rank #4) and Yeo (IAPLC 2009 rank #19) for not participating. Otherwise there is no chance of winning. I seen their 2010 work and my jaw just drop.

...and what did I got?
1) Cube Garden 60-P
2) Lily Pipe Outflow P-2
3) New Lily Pipe Inflow V-3
4) Garden mat

Cool huh... my first ADA tank and Lily Pipe... I never even dream of buying those with my own money.

Hopefully I can get better rank this year IAPLC.. *keep my finger cross*... will know the result end of July if not delay

diy aquaponics uk | Power of Nature renamed to Reborn

diy aquaponics uk

I did some changes on the Power of Nature, mostly replace the Elatine triandra with Hemianthus callitrichoides and also removed Ludwigia brevipes. I also rename it to "Reborn"

It is amazing to see how simple plant change can tranform the whole look.

easy diy aquaponics hoplink | Aquaponics Tips Getting Rid of Creepy Crawlies

easy diy aquaponics hoplink

Slugs, millipede, centipede, ants and other crawlies can start to be comfortable in the growbed.

How do we get rid of them ?

On flood and drain media base aquaponics, I recommend to flood the growbed. Most crawlies cant survive underwater for long period.

To flood the growbed first stop the siphon action by removing the enclosure bell as photo below.

or remove the siphon cap on the #strainerbell siphon as below,

Once the cap or bell has been remove, the siphon action will stop. This depends on the height of standpipe will cause the growbed to be flooded. If the standpipe is lower than the media height, it is advisable to remove some of the media or change the standpipe extender to a longer extender causing a flooding.

Downpipe photo of the siphon as below with replaced extender.

Once the growbed flooded, wait a while and you can now see many creepy crawlies start to make their way to the top of the growbed. This is a good time to get your slug picking chopstick ready and start picking.

Slugs

more slugs

and more slugs

Well have fun picking those slugs.. :)

How to get rid of ants ?

For ants, I recommend that the high water extender are left there for a few days, and let the siphon operated as normal. Then replace it back to the ones that have water 1" below media height.

I recommend doing this flooding monthly, to ensure slugs etc dont have time to multiply. It is such an easy thing to do anyway.

aquaponics diy air pump | Stirling engines A complete history of Engines

aquaponics diy air pump

Some time ago, somebody invented the steam engine. The steam engine works by heating water in an airtight container to make steam. The steam is massively expanded water, and the result is lots of pressure.  Once you have lots of pressure you bleed a bit of that pressure intermittently into a piston, and the piston gets pushed. Connect that to a crank, and you have rotational motion, and an industrial revolution. You also have lots of factory workers being blown up in hideous, explosive  accidents, with all the screaming, and loss of productivity that goes with being killed.

Later someone invented the internal combustion engine, and the turbine engine. These run on fossil fuel. They had a pretty good run until somebody discovered it was making us sick and killing everyone.

The turbine engine is a big thing you tend to stick to the ground in a power plant and make electricity. That way the factories could all have much safer working conditions where hardly anyone ever got blown up, but it also kills the earth a bit. Just a little every day. And sometimes some of them explode anyway. Thats not so good, because some use uranium to make the heat, and that never ends well.

Anyway...

The internal combustion engine tends to be used in portable things like cars, because they pack such a lot of punch for such a small weight in fuel. They also kill the world, just a little bit each day, and sometimes explode, and sometimes just mash into each other, and mash into other things that tend to be near roads. They do a lot of mashing.

The main advantage with the turbine, and internal combustion engines, is that they spread out the damage. Just one or two people from any given factory at any given time get killed by them rather than taking out half the factorys workforce all in one go like a steam engine disaster might. The mayhem and disaster is spread out so that each factory takes just a small share of the disruption to productivity. Except perhaps with the uranium stuff. I think thats why Australia is shipping all our uranium to distant countries. To move it as far away as possible.

Anyway...

A Stirling engine on the other hand is a slightly more peaceful beast that doesnt really do a lot, but what it does, it does pretty thoughtfully. Historically it fits between the steam engine and the stuff we use today (2013, just in case someone reads this in 40 years). The Stirling engine is an engine that uses the difference in heat between two of its bits of kit, to make stuff spin around without all the explosions.

There.

Thats the design description out of the way.

Its very safe, because it doesnt have a pressurised container. It needs a source of heat, but that can be solar, or waste heat from something else. Rotting compost, your wireless router, whatever. They are not a very powerful engine, which is why the internal combustion engine took over, and they are not very responsive to sudden changes in desired power output. Thats also why the internal combustion engine took over. And they are not very powerful... Internal combustion engine blah blah blah.

So...

The most beneficial thing as far as Im concerned is that they wont blow up and kill me.

Theyre not very useful. But thats not going to stop me making one.

The kind of thing that will stop me making one, is more likely to be that I have no idea how.

Ive never made an engine before, and have also never met anyone who has, but it turns out they are a pretty simple kind of beast, and with a bit of luck, wire, string, and the total combined wealth of human knowledge stored on the Internet, I might be able to make one.

People are very clever, and there are some really helpful ones out there that are willing to help me.

Ill be trying to make a very small Stirling engine that runs on the power of a small candle, that will do no work, but will hopefully work.

120 Things in 20 years - Stirling engine - It might go round and round.

diy aquaponics indoor | Advantages of Aquaponic Farming

diy aquaponics indoor

Aquaponic Farming is a new way of approaching farming. Unlike traditional agriculture where you needed plants to grow vegetables. With aquaponics, you need water and fish in order to have healthy food on your table each and every day.

Basically, aquaponic farming relies on the interdependence between fish and plants: the fish produces bio-nutrients for the plants, while the plants clean the water, creating a perfect environment for the fish to grow and develop. It is a blend of aquaculture and hydroponics that has plenty of advantages. If you need some reasons to get your own aquaponic system started, then here are some of the advantages you will get once you assemble it.

First of all you will have fresh organic food on your table each and every day, regardless of the hour when you decide to cook your meals. You simply take your tomato, cucumber of your basil from the aquaponic “field” and use it for your meals.  It is as easy as it sounds.

The second best thing about it, is that you not only grow vegetables, but you also have plenty of fish. Whether you want them for cooking tasty meals or simply for your décor, they are a great addition in your home! They also have a practical purpose, as you will never have to use chemical fertilizers on your plants, thus obtaining real organic food.

If you ask how difficult is this system to put in practice, the answer is extremely simple. Not only will you be able to assemble it all by yourself, without the help of your family or neighbors, but you can also put it wherever you want. If you move from one house to another, then you simply disassemble the system and take it with you! What can be easier than that?

Another great advantage of the hydroponic farming is that it offers you financial independence and control over your money. You know exactly how much you need to spend on your food and you will no longer depend on the market for your veggies’ supplies.

Last, but not least, it involves no dirty hands and clothes, no bending and digging, no land and little maintenance time, so it will be like your veggies and fish grow all by themselves! Quite an easy to put in practice system, suitable for all types of people, even for busy and impatient ones!

There are plenty advantages that the aquaponic system can offer you! Your health and your comfort will be improved, while your savings will considerably grow with the constant use of the aquaponic farming! If this is what you want, then why not give it a try?

easy diy aquaponics.com | This Years Balcony Garden attempt!

easy diy aquaponics.com

Good crop of tomatoes, no aphids since i planted lots of onions and marigolds, Blackberry bush has grown huge and still growing had to use an old clothes drying rack as a growing frame, Installed a new drip irrigation all the way around balcony from my 100liter water tank with the help from my grandson.
Biggest obstacle has been getting supplies to my apartment, carrying bags of growing mix and compost by bus is a pain to say the least, oh well at least its exercise. I am lucky with that i get 6 hours plus of sun on the balcony, but the winds can be a destroyer drying things out and breaking my tomatoes.

diy aquaponics pdf | Potting Garlic Chives Kuchai Redo

diy aquaponics pdf

Since I am doing most of my planting in pots, these Kuchai plants is no exception. I had to put them in pots so that it can be easily contained and transplanted elsewhere if needed. I use those slotted pot which is great in water drainage and just nice for LECA.
Garlic Chives thrives in Aquaponics and its more than enough for a small family consumption on a 3ft x 2ft growbed. In fact 1 square feet is all that is needed for an average household. So decided to transplant these to individual pots later I can decide what to do with it.
As above photo they grow really well in LECA, and made it easy to redo this plant, all I had to do is gently pull out the clumps and they will all come out.
Root ball and all, can be easily lifted out of the growbed.
They have shallow root, so it is not that invasive to the siphon like mint of some other plants making this Garlic Chive ideal on a media based siphon flood and drain aquaponics growbed.
Put all in the slotted pot with some LECA at its base.
Some of the pots I put two clumps like photo above otherwise I would run out of pots.
Filled up with LECA and just wiggle a bit to give it a snug fit.. and all done.
Thats three pot awaiting to be placed in the growbed.
Smaller clumps I put two to a pot like these above.
These Chives multiply by rhizomes within few months it will spread outward from center making the clumps bigger. Few of these I planted from seeds and some from nursery bought plants.
All plants out, and it only takes about 30 minutes to do, since I am using pots the water level in the growbed were adjusted to a lower level.
Chives dont need thick growbed, six inches is more than enough.
Altogether 17 pots, the photo is a bit grainy due its getting dark.
I planted eight pot in the existing growbed and left with these nine pots to be place in the back lane CRAFTS set.
Nine left are placed in my back lane set
