diy aquaponics fish food | Lemon Grass Reposition

diy aquaponics fish food

Earlier planted lemon grass in the gutter growbed, then I move it to the backyard set. Now its time to put it back to the gutter set.

I only have two pots of lemon grass and will need to plant another two, since I want a set of four of each type of plants that I grow in this set.

Above are two lemon grass the fragile looking plant in the center is Leeks, Leeks needs cooler temperature to do well, it is just a trial.

Few more plant variety then the gutter growbed set will be complete.

diy gravity aquaponics | Rosemary Revisited

diy gravity aquaponics

Rosemary in aquaponics is one plant that I need to retry, it didnt do well the last trial. This time Ill do it in the #SilosGrowbed style aquaponics.

Almost two weeks ago I planted few cuttings and checking it today to see whether there are any sign of positive growth.

Pull out the cuttings from the pot, and it does show some root growth.

It looks good as above, the last time I tried Rosemary due to sludge in the growbed their roots does not look that good as in photo below.

Closer look on the cuttings below, sure is promising.

Re-pot the cuttings in one of the Silo tube, to give it more root zone for better growth.

Since I do not have much growbed space left, the Silo tube are place into existing growbed.

Will be few more weeks before I know for sure whether it will grow in this style of planting.

diy aquaponics diagram | Backlane Gutterbeds Planting Simple

diy aquaponics diagram

The #gutterbeds completed few days back, after letting it cycle for couple of days, it is time to start planting. As any new set it is best to try simple plants first.

As the front gutterbed set, this I do the same by planting in pots. It will be much easier doing it this way, but it will be limited to smaller plants. Oh well.. win some lose some...

These pots that I use is for orchid and they work really well in aquaponics, they have slots for root growth and not as wide to allow LECA drop through.

Slotted pots above ideal to be use with LECA

Eighty pots in total 20 pots per 4 meter of gutter, I maintain the CRAFTS setup with water returning to left and right return tank. It works why change.. :)

Thats how much LECA save for same or even more area for planting, 3 growbed full. The trade off is I cant do large plants with the potted system. I estimated that the potted gutter system uses 75% less LECA as compared to traditional style growbed.

Siphon empting the gutters, it works like a charm. I monitor for first couple of days to see any problem, it only need minor tweaking to ensure optimum performance.

Not only did I save on LECA, the pump is replaced with a much lower power requirement. Above pump is for the four traditional growbed.

This pump above is smaller for the four gutterbeds. The reason for a smaller pump is due to the smaller size siphon. This same siphon can be use on traditional growbed thus saves power as well. So this power saving is because of smaller siphon needed on the gutterbeds.

All it is left now is to continue planting, build a shade since hot weather is round the corner. I will try going off-grid with setup since the power requirement is very low.

Till then...

easy diy aquaponics pdf | Aquaponics Tips Magnesium Sulphate

easy diy aquaponics pdf

Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO4) or commonly known as Epsom Salt are use in agriculture to promote chlorophyll production. Certain plants like Tomatoes and Chili require magnesium for their better growth.

Epsom Salt is non organic, so if your aquaponics setup is on an organic track, you have to think twice before applying this to your set.

Looks like sugar and it is highly water soluble, application as a foliar spray is common. In aquaponics, adding to growbed near the water inlet is recommended.

You dont have to add much, one table spoon is enough for a medium size growbed. Monitor for changes in the vegetable or plants leaves and only add if you suspect that the plants "green" is not as green as you might expect.

Epsom Salt is also good as a relaxant, where you can add it to warm water and soak your feed. This is what most people use it for. In a bath and foot soak, they are suppose to have a relaxing effect on the body.

So if you use Epsom Salt as a foot soak, dont throw that water away. Put it it the aquaponics set, so nothing is wasted.

Where to buy

Food Grade (Recommended)
Most Reputable Pharmacy, like Guardian, Boots and Watson

Non Food Grade
Agriculture Shop, they sell in bulk.

diy aquaponics fish bowl | Doing Few More Rosemary

diy aquaponics fish bowl

My first trial of Rosemary fail, since its roots got water damage and I was at the time using pebbles as the media for planting. Recently manage to get encouraging result and this prompt me to try more. I am using hydroton and in pots this time round.

It grow slowly, but enough to give hope that it may just work. Ill repeat the same style of growing from cutting in hydroton and place them in the gutter growbed.

Fresh cutting taken from the base plant and prepared for planting.

Cuttings needs to be stripped of their leaves on the lower part rooting hormone used prior to sticking them in the pot.

Cluster of three cuttings in a pot and hopefully all will survive, from last trial all made it.

Temporarily potted cuttings are placed in the CRAFTS set growbed, once I have space in the gutter growbed they will be reposition there.

I use Rosemary mainly for roast chicken.. they smell delicious.

Cuttings are sheltered with pots as in my Aquaponics Tips.
