diy aquaponics vortex filter | Another Pump Failed

diy aquaponics vortex filter

Another pump fail, this time the pump is running slightly more than a month. Electrical cable that was in the tank got damaged and I dont know what causes it.

I almost got an electric shock when I was about to check the pump operation, luckily I manage to back off before any bigger shock is felt.

Other pump running in the same tank doesnt have any problem like this, there also sign of worn on the spindle. This pump was use the most for two months total, its doesnt look good.

Close up on spindle.

Thats it, I will not buy this brand until I can be sure that this will not happen again.

diy aquaponics japan | One More Bite The Dust

diy aquaponics japan

Another Alpha 1000 failed on the newly planted Tomato growbed. It has a hard life anyway running continuously for more than a year for my barrel set.
Removed the pump and found the rotor shaft broke.
The shaft has been ground to a needle point and detached from the supporting rubber mount.
The permanent magnet rotor has deformed probably due to scrubbing the pump inner wall.
 Thats a sharp point
The rubber mount with broken shaft inside,
Replaced with a spare rotor, no time to change the entire unit. I need to keep an eye on this over the next 2 weeks, may need to replace to a new pump before the festive break next month.

diy aquaponics plumbing

Potted few more today as compared to yesterdays photo below, they should be ready after Chinese New Year.

diy vertical garden aquaponics | More Silos to Test

diy vertical garden aquaponics

Testing few more silos tubes for my Silos Growbed system, cut few blanks to make the necessary silo pots.

These silos are made for 12" growbed, above are 8" blanks for it. Manage to get 28 blanks from one uPVC tube.

Not going to be over ambitious here, simple plants will do.

Will sow some other plants like tomatoes and eggplant etc.

Due to lack of space in growbed, silos are place within existing growbed.

diy aquaponics stand | Crawfish Feeding Time Lapse

diy aquaponics stand

These Crayfish is very elusive and will hide the moment they saw me coming. I use the Samsung Galaxy S5 with Framelapse apps and leave the phone shooting for about 45 minutes at 1 frame per second.
Next time I will try not to feed them and get the camera ready before feeding, it may give better footage.

Anyway here is the timelapse footage.

easy diy aquaponics pdf | Aquaponics Tips Magnesium Sulphate

easy diy aquaponics pdf

Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO4) or commonly known as Epsom Salt are use in agriculture to promote chlorophyll production. Certain plants like Tomatoes and Chili require magnesium for their better growth.

Epsom Salt is non organic, so if your aquaponics setup is on an organic track, you have to think twice before applying this to your set.

Looks like sugar and it is highly water soluble, application as a foliar spray is common. In aquaponics, adding to growbed near the water inlet is recommended.

You dont have to add much, one table spoon is enough for a medium size growbed. Monitor for changes in the vegetable or plants leaves and only add if you suspect that the plants "green" is not as green as you might expect.

Epsom Salt is also good as a relaxant, where you can add it to warm water and soak your feed. This is what most people use it for. In a bath and foot soak, they are suppose to have a relaxing effect on the body.

So if you use Epsom Salt as a foot soak, dont throw that water away. Put it it the aquaponics set, so nothing is wasted.

Where to buy

Food Grade (Recommended)
Most Reputable Pharmacy, like Guardian, Boots and Watson

Non Food Grade
Agriculture Shop, they sell in bulk.

diy aquaponics fish bowl | Doing Few More Rosemary

diy aquaponics fish bowl

My first trial of Rosemary fail, since its roots got water damage and I was at the time using pebbles as the media for planting. Recently manage to get encouraging result and this prompt me to try more. I am using hydroton and in pots this time round.

It grow slowly, but enough to give hope that it may just work. Ill repeat the same style of growing from cutting in hydroton and place them in the gutter growbed.

Fresh cutting taken from the base plant and prepared for planting.

Cuttings needs to be stripped of their leaves on the lower part rooting hormone used prior to sticking them in the pot.

Cluster of three cuttings in a pot and hopefully all will survive, from last trial all made it.

Temporarily potted cuttings are placed in the CRAFTS set growbed, once I have space in the gutter growbed they will be reposition there.

I use Rosemary mainly for roast chicken.. they smell delicious.

Cuttings are sheltered with pots as in my Aquaponics Tips.

diy aquaponics texas | Getting Few More Fish Lampam Patin

diy aquaponics texas

Need few more fish to get system balance since I have more Strawberry plants in the growbed in the front. Since the tank already has some Jelawat or Hovens Carp in it, I need to get some hardy fish that can tolerate it.
For the Jelawat tank I bought these Patin or Red Tail Catfish, they are very hardy and able to survive if placed with the Jelawat aggressive behavior.
Another tank I need to stock up already has Lampam, so got few more of these Lampam or Tin Foil Barb. This fish cant survive if I put it with the Jelawat.

diy aquaponics grow bed | Fire Quicker more durable ethanol stove

diy aquaponics grow bed

A while back I made a pretty convincing ethanol camp stove out of a coke can.

It worked well and looked like this when it was running.

Ive used it a bit since then and its definitely a practical addition to any backpack.

The problem is its starting to show signs of aging. The can expands and contracts, and there is now a crease where extra gas flows giving an uneven flame.

In my model (also not my design) I used an inner sleeve with holes at the top to let the gas out. The result is that the trapped ethanol (spirit/alcohol/methanol) between the outside wall, and the inner wall boils the spirit, and creates a gas jet that looks a lot like a normal BBQ burner.

One of the problems was trying to get the top of a coke can to fit into the bottom of a coke can. Its tricky because (of course) they are the same size. It can be done, but involves gently stretching the outside one and it takes a lot of messing about.

Now Im being pretty fussy here. The little burner works really well, but it did tend to leak fuel around creases that formed in the join between the top and the bottom sections.

Someone on a Stirling engine forum pointed me towards a different method of making one. This method involves no holes, but it just encourages those creases that mine developed by itself, and I think it might be a winner.

Theirs also used a drink can, but I think it might make a more robust version if I used a tinned food can.

So, to start with, I peeled a normal, every day food tin.

The first step was to trim it to size.

I needed the top to fit into the bottom, so the first thing to do was punch a hole in it to enable a cutting tool to get in there.

I used that mystery tool that pocket knives have.

Probably a leather working tool or something.

Who knows, just punch a hole in the can.

Next jam in some tin snips or something to make a nice cut to separate top from bottom.

My tin snips are stupid, so I ended up using scissors.

This isnt the best way to use scissors, so dont do this at home unless you actually own the scissors.

One very good method of cutting a tin can, is to just tear it by grabbing a ragged tail of tin with a pair of pliers and twist. If theres a groove to follow, it actually makes a pretty straight cut.

As I said, I ended up using scissors to trip everything to it was nice and neat.

I made the inside sleeve (the one on the left), slightly taller than the other so the pot could sit on the rim and let the gas escape from the gap between the outside sleeve.

I bent a series of grooves in the base of the inner sleeve so that they would allow the flow of gas, and also allow the inside sleeve to fit inside the outside sleeve.

This was simply a case of grasping with pliers, and twisting them to the left, and slightly down toward the centre.

Next I inverted the inside sleeve and carefully positioned the outside sleeve over it so that I might press the two together by stamping down with my foot.

Which failed completely.
