diy mini aquaponics system | Ornamental Set Redo

diy mini aquaponics system

Its has been long overdue that I should set up these as it should. I was doing a lot of testing for the last 1 year on the various siphon sizes and pump capacity to get a trouble free set.

The three set was made last year and its been a troubling period that has most of my Aquaponics work on hold. These set above I finally able to set it up as it should and whats left are just the wiring to be tidy up.

Siphon used are the 20 mm and the 15 mm strainer bell, the one in the far end uses the 20 mm siphon with a 1000 liter/hour pump.

Water inlet is quite large for such a small set, and the cycle period is very rapid.

Center and the one on the right uses 15mm siphon with 500 liter/hour pump. Both these 20 and 15 mm siphon has been tested for one season and it did survive being in a small growbed with massive root all around.

At 500 liter/hour, the inlet flow is very small. The 500 liter/hour pump is very finicky and requires constant maintenance. I am still not satisfied with its performance.

There you go, next to plant... :)

diy aquaponics plumbing

Potted few more today as compared to yesterdays photo below, they should be ready after Chinese New Year.

After the other beds had stabilized putting pepper plant on this smaller unit for trial.

Two variety one is the Cili Padi kampung or Capsicum annuum Birds Eye

The next variety is the Indonesian Cili Bara.

Pepper plant are sensitive to water and they may suffer if the drainage is not correctly control. Will post the progress of this trial.

diy aquaponics shrimp | Tomatoes Going Ornamental

diy aquaponics shrimp

Done the mint test for my Ornamental set that uses the 20 mm StrainerBell siphon, on this 15 mm siphon Ornamental set I am planting tomatoes to see how this siphon stand against those deep rooting plants.
This lone strawberry plants removed and pot it separately to make way for fresh tomatoes seedling.
Sown these few weeks back and they are ready to be transplanted to the ornamental set.
Planted it directly to hydroton and bury it as deep as I can.
I put two plants in one planting space, I guest that overdo it since I do four planting space on this small set.
Oh well.., just doing it to the extreme.
Bad photos since it already dusk, will need to snap fresh photo again tomorrow and replace.

diy aquaponics mason jar | Tomatoes Overdue

diy aquaponics mason jar

Sown few tomatoes from over ripen homegrown and it was overdue for transplanting. Decide to do that on my smaller set. So out goes the buffer plants and few tomatoes seedling to take over.
Due to the overdue period, the seedling are tall and thin. I had to plant it deep so that they can developed more root from the buried stem.
When you transplant tomatoes, the rule is "the deeper the better" because more roots can developed from stem in the soil resulting stronger plants.
In forty five days or less they should fruit.

diy aquaponics ikea | Today Titbits 12 July 2015

diy aquaponics ikea

Whats happening today on my aquaponics sets.

Gutter growbed siphon tweak completed, this is necessary due I need more water circulation, aeration and noise reduction in the system. The outlet tweak to get the most from my 15 mm StrainerBell siphon.

Both the growbed having higher inflow so the outflow has to be able to accommodate the extra water flow.

Few Pacu fish has adapted to their surroundings.

Yesterdays they were hiding at one corner of the fish tank, they are more at ease today and I can start feeding them now. These few fish are for cycling the system and Ill gradually add more fish over the next two months period.

Planted simple buffer plants from cuttings, to get the growbed going. These plants will be difficult initially since the system is still cycling. Those in the brown pots are the parent plants in the gutter for watering.

Plant few more cuttings at the back lane single barrel set, these too for the gutter sets. Some cuttings may not survive the initial planting.

Finally few cili are ready for picking

These are the cili bara variety and they are best eaten raw.

I can do with more plants, will get more seedling from the nursery end of the month.

Nothing much happening.

Cheers :)

diy aquaponics pump | Staking Tomatoes

diy aquaponics pump

Tomatoes has grown and they need staking, some already producing flowers and small fruits. Use PVC conduit as stake since this is the cheapest solution and will last a long time.
We can plant eight pots of tomatoes in this small growbed, but here only six since it is sharing space with other plants.
The stake are fan outward to give more room for sunlight and easier to check for pest and other problem that may crop up later if the plants were close together.
Few plants flowering and its important that we have staking as support.
Forgotten which variety are these, should be cherry tomatoes if Im not mistaken.
The tomatoes in the ornamental set also needs support and as the ones in the back I stake them fan out to create bigger canopy to give more sun.
The plants in this set also flowering and have a single tomatoes growing. On the ornamental set, the plants are not that healthy looking, maybe due to lack of nutrient because there is only few gold fish in this set. I will need to add more fish to get better nutrient production.

This ornamental set is the one using my smallest siphon, it was an experimental setup. This was the reason why I didnt put many fish.

Thats about it on the tomatoes.
