diy aquaponics fish tank | Potted Media Water Level

diy aquaponics fish tank

Slotted Orchids pots that I use for growing made it very convenience to adjust water level. Since some plants require different water level, with individual pots it can be adjusted to suite the plants that in it.
These pots has good drainage and I can easily adjust its level within the growbed to suit what ever I plant. This pots are about 6" across, therefore larger plants will not be suitable.
Shallow roots plants like Strawberry, Chives and leafy vegetable is best to use these pots. At certain stage of their growth water level may need to be adjusted to ensure they grow. Especially after transplanting where water level are normally set to high. With many plants in a growbed, adjusting the growbed water level will affect all plants in it.
Having individually potted plants in the growbed, it then can be position higher or lower within the growbed to get water level as required.
Strawberry as above was just transplanted, so the water level are adjusted to be high with pots burried deeper in the growbed.
Plants like Chives, above dont require high water so I adjust the pots to be higher up making the water level relatively low.
Above is a simple illustration on what I do to achieve different water level for individual plants within same growbed. This I find easier to do since pots containing the plants can be lifted without stressing the plants much.

diy mini aquaponics system | Ornamental Set Redo

diy mini aquaponics system

Its has been long overdue that I should set up these as it should. I was doing a lot of testing for the last 1 year on the various siphon sizes and pump capacity to get a trouble free set.

The three set was made last year and its been a troubling period that has most of my Aquaponics work on hold. These set above I finally able to set it up as it should and whats left are just the wiring to be tidy up.

Siphon used are the 20 mm and the 15 mm strainer bell, the one in the far end uses the 20 mm siphon with a 1000 liter/hour pump.

Water inlet is quite large for such a small set, and the cycle period is very rapid.

Center and the one on the right uses 15mm siphon with 500 liter/hour pump. Both these 20 and 15 mm siphon has been tested for one season and it did survive being in a small growbed with massive root all around.

At 500 liter/hour, the inlet flow is very small. The 500 liter/hour pump is very finicky and requires constant maintenance. I am still not satisfied with its performance.

There you go, next to plant... :)

diy ibc aquaponics system | Trying Out New Pump

diy ibc aquaponics system

I had been using the Astro pump from the start of my Aquaponics hobby. Its time to look for some other brand that may be better suited for my usage. This Sunsun HJ 1100 looks interesting enough for me to give it a try.

The Astro AS1000 rated 14 watt ,1000 liter/hr at 0m and max head is 1 meter.

Rating graph of the AS 1000.

Sunsun HJ 1100 rated 20 watt 900 liter/hr at 0m and max head is 1.5 meter. The Sunsun is cheaper by RM5.00 as compared to the AS1000.

Rating for the HJ 1100

On my gutter growbed system I need more water inflow but try to maintain a pump that is small and relatively low power. So at 20 watt is the max Ill do for two 15 mm siphon at 24 inches water head.

The HJ 1100 comes with various fittings for water outlet coupling and two types of feet.

I use the rubber bung type of feet, no need of the suction type which wont really hold but just makes it difficult if you want to remove the pump from the tank.

Same like the HJ 600 that I purchased for the Ornamental set it has a variable water output by means of this blue dial that in this installation I leave it to the max.

Water inlet to gutter increase as compared to the AS 1000 delivery, this increase in water in-flow makes it necessary to retune the siphon since it had exceeds the normal operating range of a standard installation.

Whether this new pump is better than AS1000, only after a prolong usage will tell. Both pump are cheap at about USD 10.00  each.

diy aquaponics japan | One More Bite The Dust

diy aquaponics japan

Another Alpha 1000 failed on the newly planted Tomato growbed. It has a hard life anyway running continuously for more than a year for my barrel set.
Removed the pump and found the rotor shaft broke.
The shaft has been ground to a needle point and detached from the supporting rubber mount.
The permanent magnet rotor has deformed probably due to scrubbing the pump inner wall.
 Thats a sharp point
The rubber mount with broken shaft inside,
Replaced with a spare rotor, no time to change the entire unit. I need to keep an eye on this over the next 2 weeks, may need to replace to a new pump before the festive break next month.

diy aquaponics plumbing | Few More Strawberry Runners Potted

diy aquaponics plumbing

Potted few more today as compared to yesterdays photo below, they should be ready after Chinese New Year.
I have to make sure that they will grow, especially in these heat the chances of survival without parental support is low.

diy aquaponics tank | Ornamental Aquaponics Set 2nd Prototype

diy aquaponics tank

After more than 6 month trial of the 1st prototype, today a second unit was made. It is using plastic pot as the fish tank which is larger than earlier porcelain pot.
This set will be further tested for few more months then I will make it for others. That stand is temporary, final product the stand will be outside the fish bowl.
Filling growbed with LECA, before letting it cycle.
Siphon media guard cut to length with extender adjusted to get water level below LECA surface. Water inlet is a simple 15mm PVC piping with 1000 liter per hour pump feeding the set. Water head is about two feed that reduce the pump capacity to about 800 liter/hour.
First and second prototype, undergoing actual test to ensure trouble free operation. Ideal small unit for apartment, condominium, town and link houses. This set is also suitable for growing Strawberry using aquaponics method.

diy aquaponics manual | Ornamental Regrow

diy aquaponics manual

Last month I redo the ornamental set then plant Pegaga Gajah or Java pennywort as a simple plants to start with.

It starting to colonize the small growbed and show good growth.

After the other beds had stabilized putting pepper plant on this smaller unit for trial.

Two variety one is the Cili Padi kampung or Capsicum annuum Birds Eye

The next variety is the Indonesian Cili Bara.

Pepper plant are sensitive to water and they may suffer if the drainage is not correctly control. Will post the progress of this trial.

diy aquaponics video & handbook | Reducing Carbon Foot Print

diy aquaponics video & handbook

Replacing the single pump with two smaller unit that consume less power and making it simpler for water to the growbed. The current pump that I use has excess capacity that wasted by diverting it away from growbed, this only increase the power requirement of my CRAFTS set.

So the Resun Penguin 4500 has to go out and in its place are two smaller pump that I have laying around doing nothing. Ill use these two pump until it fail and then will replace with a more efficient pump that I can get later on.

The EHK 105 pump above feed the two right growbed and below the Astro 2000 will feed the left two.

I remove the timer and will run the pump 24/7, evaluating to stop running the aerator pump at night if the two pump can supply enough oxygen to the fish.

I may put the aerator on timer as a backup if the water pump fails. However for this next few weeks Ill let it run on photo cell control which only switches it on at dusk.

Will see how it goes.
