diy apartment aquaponics | WARNING Worm Farm is Out

diy apartment aquaponics

WARNING? Worm Farm is Out?
I have had my Worm farm on the balcony for just over a year, its been nice to take out the Veg leftovers and putting them in the bin and letting the red worms do their thing.
Although I dont actually have enough space to put the newly generated soil, it just seamed like a key part of my mini balcony eco farm system.
But now I cant wait to get rid of it..... and others take WARNING....
I have had an on going health issue for about 3 months, now im a vegetarian and eat pretty healthy dont smoke and keep reasonably fit, I kept getting a really bad cough followed by itch eyes and flu symptoms, it came way to often and started to get concerned so a trip to the Doctors for the usual anti viral meds, but nothing worked, this followed by weekly blood test, of which all were clear.
After some detective work at home I realized I was getting sick on a Monday, so process of elimination i narrowed down to chores I did on a Monday, and taking them weekly scrapes out to the worm bin was an unlikely cause, but guess what, seams like its quiet common to get "Compost Lungs" a bacteria spore that causes my exact symptoms and is quiet common also with Mushroom growers.

So if you have been suffering a constant cough, it may be your compost bin, this can be cured by wearing a dust mask when you attend it but I have decided to take mine out of the equation, and get well again.

Some other people with same symptoms from a worm farm LINK

diy aquaponics system pdf | Aquaponics Up Close And Personal is a Hardware

diy aquaponics system pdf

A spare Microsoft Lifecam Cinema HD was laying around not use much and gathering dust. Why dont I make something useful out of it, all the PC, Tabs, Phones even the Ipad in the house has its own camera so this webcam is extremely redundant.

Simple close up video shots is what I have in mind, so decide to make a quick retrofit to the Lifecam and make it able to focus further and at the same time giving better magnification shot.

Modifying the camera with an Eye Loupe, so got myself one of those cheap Loupe (ok the box says "LOOP") to use the lens as a magnifier for my Lifecam Cinema.

Doing a quickie check whether it work.

Just a quick twist the loupe is easy enough to dismantle and all I need is this lens.

The lens is loosely placed on the camera, wish I had bought a bigger loupe so that the lens will fit snuggly, but this will do. This lens is at 5x magnification, I will try other multiplication next time.

Use a simple tar putty that they use in Car accessories shop for fixing anything that rattle, this putty is sticky and removes cleanly. Next time I use other lens this can simply be removes and replace.

The camera came with its own flexible bracket, I use a GoPro base that has tripot 1/4 inch screw thread to use with a mini tripod. Need to secure it better, this is just a trial.

Not bad for a dollar modification, the intent is that I can make a close up video using various lens magnification value and at the same time keeping the camera as a distance where I can work with the subject like this watch for instance.

Yep, it works... need to buy few more Loupe to get other magnifying factor to test. Other webcam should work, just that I have this Lifecam Cinema handy thats all.

diy aquaponics aquarium | Slotted Pots For Potted Flood Drain Aquaponics

diy aquaponics aquarium

Starting to do more of this potted flood & drain style of aquaponics since it is very convenience and use less LECA. There are pros and cons for doing it this style, however for smaller plants it is ideal and could be one of the best way to do it.

Slotted pots, not sure whether it is a net pot or not but its look good for what I going to use it for. At Rm 2.50 each,  they have slots that is better at draining away water and root growth.

Update : Just found out that these pots is for Orchid plants, so they are Orchid Pots.

Six inches across with no other sizes available from nurseries at Selangor Green Lane, for what I am doing it is sufficient.

Compare to the normal plastic pots, these has more holes and it is just nice for LECA since the slots are narrow but many it will give good drainage.

Just nice for LECA

These are not recommended for large plants, most leafy greens is okay.

Doing one Strawberry since yesterdays almost all I had redo to pots. Ill use this for future potted flood & drain style aquaponics.

Now just wait for these to grow.

diy aquaponics water filter

(1) Jar Aro - 8"
(5) Tri Color Sharks - 3.5 " each
(1) Albino Choc Pleco - 3"
(1) Common Pleco - 4"
(1) Clown Knife - @8"
(1) Needle Gar - 6"
(1) Elec. Cat - 6"

right now they are all babies, But anyway here is how they get along:

Jardini has some days when he bothers no one, other days he spars with the Knife, yet other days he just takes occasional nips at sharks. Sharks are too fast so he never catches them. The Cat comes out at night and EVERYONE respects him...lol they all go topside except the Plecos which the elec cat seems to actually enjoy thier company. I have noticed that as long as they all have swimming space and are well fed aggression is low. If we miss a feeding well then its "Get Ready to Rumble".

diy aquaponics fish tank heater | Egg Shell Planter

diy aquaponics fish tank heater

I wanted to try a new experiment making planter for seedlings using egg shells.

First I saved my breakfast eggs and only cut off the very top of egg.
Once I had 12 I made 2 small holes in the bottom of each washed and dry egg shell.
then I filed each one with a good potting soil mix and placed back in a egg carton tray.

I added the seeds, In this case Coriander / Cilantro and lightly watered.
I placed the carton with eggshells in a tray and filled with water so it could self wick and keep moist.

Watch my video to see the process.

Search eBay for Coriander / Cilantro seeds

The Coriander / Cilantro in egg carton now ready to plant

Ready to be planted in my balcony garden

Crush the shell before planting
